Yesterday I shared with you our new adventures in homeschooling. We didn’t have a very conducive place for Ellie to sit and focus other than our office. But, our office is filled with all of our photography stuff and there wasn’t any room for her, other than one of our desks. We had a small table in the corner we used as a charging station for camera batteries + flashes, so we cleared it off and set her up there. Long story short, it didn’t work and so this week, we made a visit to IKEA and gave our office a little facelift to prepare for our new adventure.
Initially this room started out as a dining room. We still had a chandelier in here that went over a long rectangular table. Steven and I had our two desks in the center of the room facing one another under that chandelier. He doesn’t use his desk very much so we got rid of his desk and placed mine up against the window. I wanted two workspaces for the girls.
The goal:organized, clean, simple and functional.
I found the girls desk chairs at Target. The two desktops and drawers are from Ikea. The project above their desks is one we did in our art class yesterday. We made name collages with fun materials and vision boards…I will share those later.
I hung the clipboard frames to the wall (yes I did it all by myself with a laser level and tape measure). I am still pumped about this because I never get things straight first try but did this once! The frames came in a maple color from Ikea so I spray painted them white to go with the drawers at their desk. This is an area we will use to display their best work and show it off!
P.S. One of my favorite little tricks is to put tiny velcro tabs at the bottom corners of pictures you hang. It doesn’t allow them to move and get crooked over time which drives me nutty!
I have organizers in the drawers so everything has its place. Ellie has her own binder with worksheets, reading logs, etc. I like keeping it neat and in one place. We are working on her interactive Bible notebook for the Old Testament. It will be awesome to fill it all in on each book of the Bible and look back to study and enjoy. Of course, her favorite Junie B Jones books. And, last her new favorite game….the sight word game we call dynamite!
Of course I have an essential oil diffuser on their desk! I constantly diffuse Peace + Calming, Lavender and Brain Power.
I don’t mind my desk being up against the window. Especially since Izzy the kitty loves to perch on the window sill or my desk to hangout. Steven also replaced the chandelier with a new fan we found on sale at Lowes for under $50.
I have three large cabinets in the office and they were filled with our photography business stuff. I cleared one out and made it just for homeschool stuff.
The room wouldn’t be complete without one of our Mimi’s famous tree paintings!
One of my favorite things Ellie did at school this year was a poem she wrote about her dad. I hope she always feels this way.
“My dad is kind. He always helps people. He loves my mommy. He is so cool. He is talented. He loves me.”
One of my favorite portraits of me + my hottie hubby, taken by the fabulous Richard Israel in medium format film.
Izzy got spayed yesterday and this is basically how she feels about it. I kept accidentally saying she got her tubes tied…. you know what I mean right?
I feel more prepared now that we have a great space to have school in. Ellie is loving it and this has been a fantastic week. I am completely exhausted mentally and physically but I feel like I am seeing my old Ellie again. She is so happy!
